What is WebID?
WebID is the international industry leader and inventor of products for online personal identification and electronic signatures. Our products facilitate the secure electronic identification of people via video call using all popular terminal devices (computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones). You can obtain your electronic signature for online contract signing without any tedious or expensive hardware – nor do you have to go to the post office
What do I generally need for identification?
- A common terminal device (computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone)
- An Internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Opera) or a free app (WebIdent)
- A camera
- A stable Internet connection
- A mobile phone to receive a code via SMS
- A valid ID document
How is identification carried out?
You start video identification with your ID document to hand. A member of the WebID team then guides you through the legitimation process, checking your data and your ID document. At the end, you will be asked to enter your TAN number online. The TAN is sent to you via SMS once your details have been confirmed.

How do I access video legitimation, and where do I find my Ident-ID?
The process can vary, depending on the contract partner to whom you need to identify yourself. Generally speaking, however, they will send you a link and explanation of how you can start our process. Always check your e-mail inbox and your spam folder if you cannot find this information.
The partner will also guide you to WebID, where one of our staff will welcome you online and take you through all the necessary steps.
Before a video-call is set up, the user holds their ID document in front of the camera. The system then automatically checks whether the ID is authentic and can be matched to one of 2,500 different international identification documents drawn from 175 countries and stored in the ever growing database. When all of this has been verified, the video-call can begin.
How long does the legitimation process take, on average?
On average, legitimation takes four minutes.
How much will video identification cost me?
For you as a private customer, the video identification process is free. The fees for the process will be paid for by your provider.
Who carries out the legitimations?
WebID has permanent, trained identity staff at its high-security identity centre in Solingen.
How secure are the identification process and my data?
WebID complies with and exceeds all data protection regulations and other requirements and laws. Your contract partner receives your personal data from us in a secure format involving multiple encryption, satisfying the strictest requirements in terms of data protection and reliability. WebID has a high-security identity centre in Solingen with sophisticated access controls. Only trained staff carry out identifications and have access to the data from each process involved. The staff are trained by criminal psychology experts from the BKA Police Commissioner’s office and undergo further training every six weeks.
Which ID documents can I use to identify myself?
You can use any valid German personal ID document or passport. We also recognise virtually all international ID documents – especially from the EU, Turkey, EFTA nations and the USA. A total of 2,500 different documents from 175 countries. Our staff are trained accordingly. Your provider can always tell you if your document will be accepted for legitimation purposes. Our staff are always happy to help too.
What technical requirements should my smartphone or tablet meet?
For successful identification via a mobile device, you simply need the “WebID app”, which you can download via the App Store or Google Play Store. iOS version 8.0 or above is needed for the app from the App Store.
Alternatively, you can also identify yourself via the standard browser on your mobile device (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari).
How do I know if my identity has been confirmed by WebID?
Once the call with one of our agents has been completed, you will receive a message via e-mail informing you that the identification process has been completed successfully. This is sent immediately to your provider, and they deal with this from there. Please allow an appropriate period of time for this stage of the process (48 hours, unless otherwise specified by the provider).
What will happen to my data?
We only save your data to process the current order. This includes the obligations surrounding identification and documentation vis-à-vis the customer or the authorities. You can find more information on this in our data protection policy. One exception is the service that we use to be able to verify you again for recurring identification purposes. To do this, you can create a user profile and accelerate the identification process even further in the event of multiple visits.
What technical requirements should my computer meet?
The latest version of an Internet browser is needed for the WebID session. Mozilla Firefox ESR, Microsoft Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Apple Safari are the best options for this.
Your bandwidth must be at least 2 Mbit/s (DSL, LTE, VDSL). This is the case in 95 per cent of German households.
There are no limitations in terms of operating systems.
Why do I need to identify myself?
Your identity needs to be securely verified for various commercial transactions. This identification is often required by law, for example in the Money Laundering Act (GwG). WebID video identification is used as a method of legitimation for a wide range of applications: opening bank accounts, applying for credit cards, taking out insurance policies, age checks for youth protection, verification of driving licences, prevention of fraud in e-commerce and many other situations.
How do I use video identification?
Our core service hours are Monday to Sunday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Is customer support available?
For our end users, daily support is available by e-mail from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In which countries and languages is WebID available?
WebID offers its services worldwide. You can reach us from wherever you have Internet access. All of our staff speak German and English, and the information on our website is also available in both languages. We also offer our service as standard in French, Italian and Polish – and in other languages on request.
Which technologies are supported for video telephony?
WebID supports browser-based WebRTC technology which is included as standard with most popular browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, etc.). We also offer identification via an Android and iOS app.
When did WebID launch?
WebID Solutions GmbH was founded on 24 October 2012 in Berlin by Frank Stefan Jorga, Franz Thomas Fürst and Tim-Markus Kaiser, and has been successfully operating on the market with its video identification product since April 2014.
Is the identity centre distributed over several sites?
No, the WebID identity centre, which is classed as a European reference installation, is based in Solingen, near Düsseldorf. WebID has the option at any time to access other identity centres at other locations at short notice, and to therefore safeguard the processing of legitimation requests at all times.
WebID employs only its own staff at its identity centre to carry out identity verification procedures, and does not outsource any processes to third parties or subcontractors (in accordance with the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority circular of 15 June 2017).
Is there certification available of GwG compliance (money laundering legislation) by the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority?
The permit from the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority for WebID identification methods was issued in writing on 4 February 2014.
